The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Getting Started on Zwift
So, You Want to Become a Virtual Cyclist? My E-Rank Guide to Zwift.
A few weeks ago, I was just a gamer with a new piece of fitness tech. Now, my life revolves around watts per kilo, virtual mountain climbs, and epic battles with my rival, Burnie.
My videos about this journey have been seen by hundreds of thousands of people, and the number one question I get is: “How do I get started?”
If you, like me, are looking for a way to make cardio less of a chore and more of an epic adventure, you’ve come to the right place. This is my simple, no-nonsense guide to everything you need to begin your own Zwift journey.
Table of Contents
Part 1: The Mandatory Gear (The “Must-Haves”)
To enter the world of Zwift, you need a way to translate your real-world effort into in-game speed. You have two main paths and I have discount links for both.
Option A: The Zwift Ride + KICKR Core v2
This is a package best suited for those that don’t already own and want something simple and effective. (This is my main bike now).

- My Recommendation: The Zwift Ride
- This is the official bike from Zwift. It comes with everything you need, including virtual shifting and a super simple setup process. It’s the perfect “plug-and-play” solution to get you riding in minutes.
- Best for: People who don’t already own a bike and want the most seamless experience possible.

Option B: Your own bike + The KICKR Core v2
If you already own an outdoor bike, a smart trainer is the most cost-effective and versatile option. You simply remove your back wheel and attach your bike’s frame to the trainer. (This is what Burnie uses).

- My Recommendation: The Wahoo KICKR Core v2
- This is a fantastic “direct-drive” smart trainer that offers a super realistic ride feel. It automatically adjusts resistance to simulate hills and is famously quiet. It’s a top-tier piece of equipment that will grow with you as you get stronger.
- Best for: People who already own a road or hybrid bike and want a high-quality, realistic training experience.

Please note: These are not the only options. Many other brands create trainers and even all in one smart bikes like Garmin, Wahoo, JetBlack and Van Rysel. The above are the ones I could secure a discount for. If you live outside those regions you will have to find a retailer that sells the those products.
Part 2: The Software (Your Ticket to Watopia)
Once you have your hardware, you need the game itself!
- Zwift Membership: The Zwift software runs on a PC, Mac, Apple TV, or even your phone/tablet. It’s a subscription service that gives you access to all the virtual worlds, group rides, races, and workouts.
- Cost: $20 USD per month or $200 USD for an annual subscription. It’s a small price to pay for unlimited motivation and better than Netflix anyway.
Part 3: The Optional Gear (The “Highly Recommended” Upgrades)
You can start riding with just the mandatory gear, but these items will make your experience 100x more comfortable and enjoyable.
- Heart Rate Monitor: This is almost a must-have. It helps you track your effort, train in specific zones, and proves to your friends that you did almost have a heart attack winning that E-rank race.
- Cycling Shorts (Bibs): Trust me, and trust the comments section on my first video. An hour on a bike saddle without padded shorts is a painful experience. This is the single biggest upgrade you can make for your comfort.
- A Powerful Fan: You’re exercising indoors with no wind. You are going to sweat… a lot. A good, powerful fan isn’t a luxury; it’s essential for staying cool and performing your best.
- A Towel: See above. You’ll need one (or three).
- Water Bottles & Cages: Hydration is key. Make sure you have at least two water bottles within arm’s reach before you start any serious ride.
- Floor Mat: A simple mat protects your floor from sweat and reduces vibrations, which will keep your family or downstairs neighbors happy.
