How VR can improve your fitness and wellness: VR fitness guide

Have you ever wondered if virtual reality can help you achieve your fitness and wellness goals? VR is not just a fun and immersive way to play video games, but also a powerful tool to improve your health, body, and well-being. In this article, we will explore how VR can benefit your fitness and wellness, and give you some tips and recommendations to get started with VR workouts.

VR is a technology that creates a simulated environment that you can interact with using a headset and controllers. Unlike traditional screens, your entire body becomes the controller rather than a gamepad or mouse and keyboard. This makes VR a great option for fitness and wellness, as you can enjoy various activities that are fun, engaging, and effective.

How many calories can you burn in VR?

According to the VR Institute of Health and Fitness, VR can burn up to 15 calories per minute, depending on the intensity of the activity. That’s more than walking, cycling, or swimming. VR can also improve your cardiovascular health, muscle strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility. Moreover, VR can boost your mental health, as it can reduce stress with guided mediations and yoga practices.

In my own test I tried to see if I could burn 10,000 calories in one week, here is a video showcasing that experiment and gameplay of some of the popular VR fitness titles

VR as a habit

One of the best things about VR is that it can help you form a keystone habit. A keystone habit is a habit that triggers positive changes in other areas of your life. For example, working out in VR can make you more likely to drink more water, go to bed on time, spend less time seated and looking down at your phone or computer. These habits compound to improve your overall fitness and wellness in the long run.

Best VR apps for VR fitness and wellness

If you are wondering what kind of VR apps or games you can use for fitness and wellness purposes, here are some examples:

Beat Saber: A rhythm game where you slash blocks with lightsabers to the beat of music. This game can improve your hand-eye coordination, reaction time, and upper body strength.

How often should you workout in VR?

The frequency and intensity of your VR workouts depend on your personal goals and body type. Some people may use VR to lose weight, build muscle, improve endurance, or enhance their mental health. Others may use VR to have fun, relax, socialize, or explore new worlds. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to how often you should workout in VR, but you should listen to your body and adjust accordingly.

For me personally, I use VR every day, but I vary the type and duration of my activities. I don’t go 100% every day, because that would be too exhausting and potentially harmful. Some days I may use VR yoga or play something with less intensity, like Beat Saber or Population:one. Other days I may challenge myself with more demanding games, like Pistol Whip or Thrill of the Fight. My goals are now more focused on mobility and staying pain free, so VR enables me to get my movement in every day without getting bored or injured.

Tips to use VR safely and effectively for fitness

  • Make sure you have enough space to move around without hitting anything or anyone.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that allow you to move freely.
  • Use a sweat-resistant cover or wipe for your headset to keep it clean and hygienic.
  • Warm up before starting any activity and cool down after finishing.
  • Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your session.
  • Listen to your body and take breaks when needed.

VR is a wonderful way to improve your fitness and wellness in a fun and convenient way. You can choose from a variety of apps and games that suit your preferences and goals. You can also enjoy the benefits of VR for your physical and mental health. And you can create a keystone habit that can transform other aspects of your life.
