Learn how to throw a punch

Before you even think about putting on your headset. You need to learn the bare basics of throwing a punch. Now ideally you would head over to a gym and get professional help by a proper boxer. So I’m going to do the second best thing and bring a PRO boxer to you. Below is a video of which will teach you just that in 4 minutes.

How to Defend

Defending in real life and in VR is a little different. Because of the Quest 3’s camera’s I prefer to hold my controllers out in front of me rather than to the side of your head. This will allow you to block most jabs and straights by default.

Tip: If you opponent is taller than you, hold a higher guard than normal as in VR is very easy to punch over you’re guard. If they are much smaller than you then you should hold a lower guard as your body will be where they aim.

Setting up your space

Room Scale VS Joystick which one is best? In my opinion, you’re gonna wanna play with Roomscale if possible. It allows you to physically move which is way faster than what you can do with the joystick and it gives you an opportunity to work and practice on your footwork. So do decide to have 2.5 x 2m of playspace then I aslo recommend coming to the settings and turning on mixed reality, this is just so so you don’t smash your hands on the wall or TV.

If you don’t have the space don’t worry, a lot of people still have great success with joystick in my opinion its not quite tiring so you can play for longer. And in this case, I actually think its more fun to be in VR rather than MR. Just make sure you put a mat down or something so you know exactly where you are.

Testing it on the dummy

Before we jump into our first ranked match let’s put it all together in on the dummy. Now you might think that throwing the fastest possible punch is the best way to do more damage, well not always. Just in the last 2 weeks or so there’s been 3 different damage systems and they’re constantly tweaking it.

But in general you want to imagine you are punching through your target and focus on really good form.

Not only are you going to do more damage in game, but you’re not going to reinforce bad habits and you’re gonna decrease the chance of you getting injured.

Warm up

Depending on your age bracket here, you might wanna do a quick warm up. I normally do some neck rolls, shoulder movements, body weight squats and then do some practice shadow boxing on the dummy.

Be respectful

Always be respectful touch gloves before each round, and be gratuitous in your wins and defeats. There’s no need to taunt your opponent.

Spammers

Don’t be a spammer, just don’t do it.

To deal with spammers what you wanna do is hold a high guard and start walking backwards in a circle. Wait till they get tired then step forward and commit to a few good punches.
