Quest 3’s Specs

The Quest 3 has a resolution of 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye, which is a significant improvement over the Quest 2‘s 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye. This coupled with the use of pancake lenses means that the Quest 3 has a sharper and clearer image quality and with less screen door effect.

spec table of the Quest 3

The Quest 3 has a variable refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, which means that it can adjust the frame rate depending on the content and the battery level. A higher refresh rate reduces motion sickness and increases realism.

The Quest 3 also has a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor, which is a powerful chip designed specifically for VR and AR devices. The Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 enables the Quest 3 to run more demanding games and apps smoothly and efficiently, approximately doubling the GPU processing power compared to the Gen 1 chipset.

Comfort Levels

While the Quest 3 is designed to be more comfortable than its predecessor, Meta may have not executed this in the best way. It has a light weight of 515 grams, an improved facial interface, with more ventilation and less light leakage. However, the strap is still a major issue for Quest users and for extended sessions. You will find a lot pressure being put upon your face.

If there is one accessory I recommend, it’s picking up a 3rd party strap. This takes the comfort score from a 5 to an 8.

The Quest 3 also has a large IPD range of 53 to 75 mm, which means that it can accommodate more users with different eye distances.

Convenience and tracking

The Quest 3 is very convenient to use, as it does not require any external sensors or wires. The Quest 3 uses inside-out tracking, which means that it uses cameras on the front of the headset to track your head, controller and hand movements. It comes with two touch controllers, which are ergonomic and intuitive to use.

The Quest 3 has a battery life of about one to two and half hours, depending on the usage. Mixed reality in particular seems to drain the battery very fast. The Quest 3 can be charged with a USB-C cable, which is included in the box. The Quest 3 also has a built-in microphone and speakers, as well as a headphone jack for optional audio accessories.

Does the Quest 3 have good games?

The Quest/Oculus library is probably the best VR library to have access to. If we look at some of the great games in 2023 that came out like Asgards Wrath 2, Assassins’ Creed Nexus or Dungeons of Eternity, all of these are Quest exclusives (for now). And considering how easy it is to connect to Steam for PCVR gaming which is probably the second best VR library. You can be confident you have your bases covered. Here are some examples of the best quest games and best PCVR games.

PCVR support

One of the most appealing features of the Quest 3 is its ability to support PCVR games and apps. This means that you can connect your Quest 3 to your PC via a USB-C cable or wirelessly via Wi-Fi, and access thousands of VR titles from platforms like SteamVR and Oculus Rift. This way, you can enjoy the best of both worlds: the portability and convenience of a standalone headset, and the power and variety of a PC VR headset.

When connecting to your computer for PCVR gaming you can either use Meta’s Airlink, Virtual Desktop or Valves new SteamLink which has a native app for Quest users.

Quest 3’s Mixed Reality

Another exciting feature of the Quest 3 is its mixed reality capabilities. Mixed reality is a term that refers to blending virtual elements with real environments. The Quest 3 can do this by using its cameras to scan your surroundings and create a virtual representation of them. This way, you can interact with your physical space in VR, such as placing virtual objects on your table or walking around your room. The Quest 3 also supports passthrough mode, which allows you to see your real environment through the headset without taking it off. This is useful for safety reasons or for switching between VR and reality quickly.

Many games from the Quest library have recently been updated to support mixed reality. Combat games like Thrill of the Fight and Broken Edge can now be played more safely and without the fear of breaking your television (or hands!).

What about eye tracking?

No unfortunately the Quest 3 does not support eye tracking like the Quest Pro.

Q3 VR Fitness

The Quest 3 stands out as an exceptional standalone headset for VR fitness, offering unparalleled access to a vast library of popular fitness titles like Les Mills BODYCOMBAT and FitXR. These games, combined with the headset’s advanced mixed reality support, provide a unique and immersive fitness experience.

The Quest 3’s wireless design ensures a hassle-free workout, allowing for complete freedom of movement. This is essential for VR and XR fitness, where space and flexibility are key. To get started with you VR fitness journey you may wish to check out our VR Fitness Challenges article.

Quest 3 Price and Value for money

The Quest 3 is priced at $499 for the 128 GB model and $649 for the 512 GB model. This is more than the Quest 2 when it launched, The Quest 3 is still great value for money considering its improved features and performance. The Quest 3 also comes with a Asgards Wrath 2, which is valued at $60 dollars.

Consumer Score

The Quest 3 has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from consumers who have bought it or tried it out. According to Amazon, as of January, 2024, the Quest 3 has an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on over 3,000 customer reviews. Most reviewers praise the Quest 3 for its high-resolution display, smooth performance, comfortable design, easy setup, PCVR compatibility, mixed reality features, and affordable price.

Some of the common complaints about the Quest 3 are related to the first party accessory prices, comfort and battery life.

Influencer opinions

The Quest 3 has also received favorable opinions from influencers and experts in the VR industry. For example, Linus Tech Tips with over 15 million subscribers said that the “Quest 3ligitmately is a really exiting option” especially for those that want to dabble in AR.

Similarly, Ben Lang, the co-founder and executive editor of Road to VR, a leading VR news website, said that the Quest 3 is “Quest 3 is the best standalone headset to date even if you forget about any of the mixed reality potential”. At the time of his review there wasn’t a lot of mixed reality content but that has changed in the short time since it’s release.

Although at the time on writing, with only 380 subscribers, yours truly made a video comparing it to the Pico 4. I find the Quest 3 to be the superior stand alone device in almost every way, The game library, mixed reality support and improved specs make it the better headset. The down sides of the quest 3 like the comfort and battery life can be fixed with accessories.

Quest 3 Alternatives

In 2024 the Quest 3 is the clear winner in the stand alone space, the only other options are the Quest 2, the Pico 4 or waiting for the Quest 3 lite. Other headsets at this price point require a PC or a Playstation. And the other upcoming standalone units like the Apple Vision Pro are targeting enterprise customers.
