HoverFit VR – A Squat simulator [Gameplay and workout stats]

Hoverfit VR is a free to try browser based VR game, you’ll be racing your friends or the AI. But there’s one massive catch, you can only move by squatting in real life. So a 20 minute play session will have your legs absolutely burning. Here’s my thoughts on the gameplay and workout stats.

How to play Hoverfit

Hoverfit is a browser based VR game. Which means you can just head over to https://www.hover.fit/ and click play game. While you can play the game as a guest user, to make the most you’ll also want to sign up with a heyvr account. This allows you to track your progress and earn rewards.

Gameplay

The core gameplay loop of this game is almost like Mario Kart. You’ll be racing online or against the computer across various tracks like Thunder Canyon or Thrill City. They also have 3 modes to choose from; Race, Tag and Free Roam.

There are speed boosts and power jumps to collect but no offence powers, yet. Once you finish you’ll earn Fitabux which lets you unlock helmets and some customisation. You can also buy coins which can be spent to customise the looks and feel of your character, hover board or even unlock maps. They also have an annual pass which unlocks everything for you.

They also have global leaderboards which track things like the fastest lap so there is additional replayability, if your legs can handle it.

When I first tried it, the speed in which you move was determined by how fast you are squatting. I gave the feedback to the developers that would love to see future updates that perhaps focus more on good form and range of motion as this is becoming a bigger priority in my own fitness journey. They made the changes within a month!

Workout stats

As you are essentially doing high volume body weight squats, this is a great workout to not only train the strength but also the endurance of your legs and helps them become resistant to a high work load. Those that are familiar with games like Pistol Whip will know just how punishing a 5 minute track can be on the lower body.

In my 20 minute test I did 4 races with a 1-2 minute rest between each race. The races normally last from 2-5 minutes but you do have control over how many laps there are so they could be longer than that. But in 5 minutes I was reaching my failure point.

I burnt approximately 243 calories, did around 600 squats and with an average heart rate of 147 and a max of 182.

Verdict

Overall

Overall it’s a fun way to challenge yourself and friends into a squat contest and it’s nice that it’s free.
